  2. Hello, My name is Kelly Freund. I grew up in Wichita, but have lived in Emporia KS for the past 6 year. I live here with my husband of 9 months, my 6 year old daughter (in the 1st grade) and we are expecting, due in March. I am currently focusing my time on my family and finishing up school. When I am not doing either one of those I am in the field with my husband, who farms full time. This is my 2nd degree. My first degree is in recreation and specialized in the planning of kids activities. When I graduated I had a very hard time finding a job in that area. My husband, father, and boss from my internship of my first degree all convinced me that teaching is where I should be. I have a love for working with children and making a difference in the lives I am working with. I love working with the lower levels (k-2).

  3. Hi, my name is Jessica Tibbott. I'm origionally from a little town outside of Wichita named Valley Center. However my dad was in the Air Force so we did some moving around, so my childhood was spent between England, New Mexico and here. I don't currently have a job, but I have worked as a waitress every summer for the past 5 years. When I'm not studying, I enjoy cross-stitch and a good movie. In May, I will hopefully graduate with my double degree in Biology and Secondary Education. After that I will look for a high school science position, work on my Masters and eventually work my way up to college level teaching. I come from a long line of teachers, so I suppose you could say some of my inspiration comes from them. However there have been several teachers I have had that influenced my decision even more. I'm looking forward to gainging valuable experience from this class and learning more about what it takes to be a good teacher.

  4. Hi,My name is Jennifer Rozean and I am currently a senior, but I will not graduate until Spring of 2011. I am married to a great man named Jason and we have 3 kids; Abigail, Ethan and Nicolas. I live in Clay Center, Kansas and enjoy spending my days volunteering at our schools and I begin subbing this fall.

I was employed as a para, but left that job for my full time schooling. I enjoyed being a para and it helped me to decide to become a teacher. I would love to teach 4th or 5th grade, but I know I will take whatever God gives me.

In what spare time I have I love to read, sing and draw. Our kids are in volleyball and football and as soon as thats over we will do basketball. I am a huge KU fan and have found out that I live in the bad part of Kansas to be a KU fan, mostly KSU fans over here!!

I chose education because 2 of my kids had IEPS at one time and sometimes the classroom teacher came to the meetings and sometimes she/he was to busy. When I was employed as a papa I saw the same thing happen to others. It hurt and I want to be the teacher that reaches out to parents and that wants to help and encourage their student.I am looking forward for my classroom to be the environment that adapts to the students learning needs, not them adapting to mine.

I look forward to teaching one day as I am sure we all do. Good luck this semester to everyone!!

  5. My name is Kirby Woods. I have recently bought a new house in my hometown of Oxford, KS (about 50 miles south of Wichita). I have been married to Daniel for almost 3 years. We have a 6 year old daughter, Briona and two boys: Landon (2) and Braxton (4 months). Currently, I do not work outside the home; I am a full time student and a full time Mommy. My husband is gone for months at a time doing maintenance in oil refineries around the country, so I am super busy!!!

I have wanted to teach for as long as I can remember. After about 2 years, I left school to be a mom and worked as a para, which got back into the mode of going back to school and finishing. I will student teach in January and graduate in May. I am so excited; this has been a long time coming for me. I hope to teach 5th or 6th grade when I am finished. I was inspired by my 3rd grade teacher, my 5th grade teacher and my high school English and Science teachers to become an educator myself. These individuals really showed me how rewarding an excellent teacher can be for both the students and the teacher alike!!!

  6. Hello everyone! I am Ember Dortch. I am married and have three children. My oldest son is 12, then I have a daughter who is 3 and my baby boy is now 14 months old!

I am currently living in Garden City, KS and have been here for 11 years. I grew up in Ulysses, KS and moved to Elkhart, KS when I was a Jr. in high school.

I am currently in the Transition to Teach program, but had decided to get into education before beginning that program. I was working for Area Mental Health Center and the best part of my job (and the only part I liked)was when I got to teach children's group. I loved working with the kids and connecting with them. I realized that if I loved it so much, I should do it full time. I quit my job to be a long term substitute and started back to school for elementary education. Shortly after that semester began, I interviewed for a computer/business teacher at Garden City High School. That's how I am where I am now!

I am currently teaching High School business and computers. I will more than likely stay in this content area for a few years, but am interested in pursuing a Master's degree in Special Education.

My decision to become a teacher was entirely my own, but I was inspired by a couple of my teachers. They really touched my life, and I think about them often. I am hoping to inspire one of my students.

  7. Hello, my name is Darcy Couse and I am from Lucas, KS. I am married to my husband Justin and we have two children. Dharma is 9 and going to be a third grader and my youngest is Dayton and will be starting Kindergarten this year (no more daycare!!! yeah!) I am currently a para at Sylvan Unified School District in Sylvan Grove Kansas. This is what has driven me to finish my education. I do not want to be in special education but would love to teach anything from 5th -9th grade. However I will teach any level to get my first job!
I am currently a volleyball referee in the fall and a junior high girls basketball and track coach in the winter and spring. I am the Vice President of the Lucas Luray PTO and serve on the site council. My husband and I are the youth group leaders at our local churches and keep very busy. On top of all of this I am taking 17 hours this fall trying to finish my education as quickly as possible.
Good Luck to all this semester!

  8. I am Brandon Parker and I am from McPherson, KS. I have been married to my wife,Tiffany, for 9 years and we have a 4 year old son, Cole, who just began preschool. I graduated in the mid 90's from KU with a degree in sports management. I worked in the KU athletic department for 6 years before going into private business.

I am currently the athletics/activities director at Tonganoxie High School. I am currently in the transition to teaching program and I teach leadership and strength training classes at THS. In addition to the administrative duties for extra-curricular activities and teaching, I also coach the varsity volleyball team with my wife, who also is a teacher in our elemenatary school. Needless to say the fall is pretty time consuming.

I have decided to pursue my teaching certificate from the urging of my principal who would like for me to fulfill a role of assistant principal in the near future.

Good luck to everyone as you look to begin (in case you haven't already) your career in education. It is very rewarding!

    Brandon

  9. My name is Christine Griggs. I grew up in Halstead, Kansas - and after living in Dodge City and Lawrence - we now reside in a small town near Wichita, Kansas. I am married to a mechanical engineer and have three children ages 13, 11, and 8. Right after high school, I attended Kansas State, where I received a social work degree and worked in the foster care/adoption field, as well as Big Brothers/Big Sisters. I then chose to stay at home to raise the kiddos and when my last child started kindergarten, I started substitute teaching. I loved it! I enjoy the excitement that children can bring to learning - if it is encouraged and supported by a teacher. As a mother of three children in our "gifted program" I also see the need to try and meet individual needs as best we can - academically, socially, and in the area of self-confidence. I would like to teach in the 3rd to 6th grade range and especially enjoy the areas of reading/language arts/english.

  10. Hi Everyone, my name is Dani Ricke and I am in my last year of school!! (For now, until I get my masters) I am originally from Hays, but just recently moved to Pratt because my husband of 3 months is student teaching here. I am currently working as a para with three very busy fourth graders at one of the schools here in Pratt. They definitely keep me busy, but I am learning so much working with them. I chose to be in the education field because I really love working with students and so far this semester has really reiterated that for me. I would like to teach in a lower elementary classroom or special education. I don't really care which one though because I enjoy it all. My influence in education is my former first grade teacher. She was so great and you could really tell that she cared for every one of her students. She was always there for anything, whether it be friend problems or just to listen to you about what you did over the weekend. I hope to be a great teacher like her soon.

  11. My name is Alison Mohamed and I was born in the beautiful island of Trinidad & Tobago. Presently, I live in the state of Virginia with my husband and two kids. I have also lived in Texas, New York, Florida and the Bahamas. As you can see, I love to move around. I am currently a Substitute Teacher in Virginia and have been working with elementary students for about two years now. This experience has allowed me to teach students in various grade levels. It also made me realize how important it can be to make a difference in a child’s life. Therefore, I decided to pursue a teaching degree so that I could become a full- time General Education Teacher. I guess, my influence in education comes from the wonderful kids I work with on a daily basis.

My goal is to complete my Elementary Education degree by Spring of 2010. I would really like to teach first or second grade, if given the opportunity, because I enjoy working with the younger students. I have also worked as a teacher’s assistant in an elementary Special Education class and as a long-term Sub, teaching Math. I look forward to completing my degree because I can’t wait to start making a difference in children’s lives in a positive way.

  12. Hello! My name is Kersten Schmitz, I lived in North Dakota until I was 14 when we moved to Garden City, KS. I currently work at the little Dillon's in Hays shifting between stocking shelves, checking, carrying out, being the front end coordinator, and working in customer service. I am going into education because I love watching people gain knowledge and understanding. Teaching is in my family with my Great grandma, dad, and two cousins teaching or going into teaching. I want to work with high school aged children teaching physical education and health until I get my masters to teach biology and anatomy and physiology. I chose physical education because it was the easiest degree for me to earn because of my Athletic Training major. I love anatomy and physiology and the health fields, so I want to teach those to other people. I think my dad influenced me to teach as well as my Great Grandmother, and my mom influenced me with the health field and my love of anatomy and physiology. Some interesting things about me, I was in Uganda, Africa for two weeks this summer for a medical mission trip and I am engaged and will be getting married in July 2010.

  13. Hey, my name is Mallory Kerns and I am origionally from Naponee, NE. That is for the most part 2 hours north of Hays. I currently live with my husband here in Hays. We have only been married a little over a month. I work at the Hays Area Childrens Center as a workstudy and an afternoon paraeducator. I mainly work with children ages 1 to 3. The area I am interested in teaching is Agriculture, emphasis on Animal Science, to middle and high school students. I started my college career as a pre-vet major. Vet school acceptance did not happen and I just happened to see a sign for Agruclture Education up in the Ag Department in Albertson. This felt right and I always get an excitement when I am helping a classmate study or just talking about something dealing with agruculture, especially when I know information about the subject. I grew up on a farm and agriculture was and will always be a par tof my life, so why not teach it. My teachers in high school always said I would be a good teacher, but I never really took them seriously, till now. The teacher that influenced me the most was probably my high school ag teacher. He was willing to help with anything and help to further create my love for agriculture.

  14. Hi, I am Jacque Schawe and I am from Dodge City, Ks. I am currently taking the last two semesters. I am currently majoring in Elementary Education with a Special Education Minor and I hope to student teach next fall. I also have a Bachelor’s degree from FHSU in Sociology but my love has always been to teach students. I would either like to continue to teach at the elementary level or teach special education.

I am currently long-term substituting at Dodge City High School with MR special needs students and this will be my third year. I was told that if I wanted this job after student teaching that it would be mine after I was certified. I think the people that influenced me the most was my third grade teacher whom I had for 2 years. She encouraged me to be the best that I could be and I also was the one that was after I caught on to what she was doing that I would love helping any students in sight. I also had high school teachers that encouraged me as well to do the dream that I was born to do and that would be teach. I have always had a love for special needs students when I was a para for them for the past seven years. I like to see the student’s faces when the light comes on in their brain and they actually get something that we have taught.

I have been married for ten years to my wonderful husband Galen. We have two corgi dogs Porkchop and Jewels. In my free time I like to enjoy going to Wichita to visit all of our nieces and nephews. I also like to sew, read, and cross stitch when I have time. I always enjoy learning something new everyday as well.

  15. Hi, my name is Amanda Siebert. I was born and raised in Garden City, Ks. I'm working in the Hays school district as a substitute teacher but I am also on my leave of absence from Target and Applebee's. I chose the field of education because I love to teach people new things. It excites me to see others finally get what the lesson is about and watch them applying it in real life situations. For the first four years of teaching I would love to be a seventh grade math teacher, from there I want to loop second and third. Since I have been substituting for all the levels, these classes are the ones that stand out to me the most. I have always wanted to become a teacher since I was a third grader. My third grade teacher Mrs. Weber had inspired me that as a teacher you can learn and play at the same time. So with this desire in my heart for that long, I am taking teaching seriously. Yes, I do apply humor into my teaching as well, but, I also have the students get their homework done within class time.
Being in Garden City has given me opportunities to see that kids are slipping through the cracks. Almost in all of my classes that I took at the high school, I ended up helping at least one classmate of mine. However, my freshman year, I ended up teaching my Algebra I class since the teacher didn't want to teach in any other way than his own. A teacher like that makes me upset and what to do more for students. With that in mind, in a couple years I will have a classroom of my own!
Other than teaching, I love to visit my family back in Garden City and also do different bible studies along with mission trip! All in all, my life is up to what God wants, hopefully that is with teaching because I'm enjoying every moment of it but if not than He will lead me to the right path!
I think that is enough for now but I do hope to take ideas and concepts of what we learn through this class and be able to apply it into my future classroom. Good luck to you all.

  16. Hi, I am Lacey Keller from Palco, KS, a little town north of Hays. I am currently employed as a receptionist at a local doctor's office.

My husband and I have been married for 5 years. We are in the process of adopting our first child, Jamie. He is the star of our fairytale lives!! Jamie came into our lives in February of this year. My husband and I run a cow/calf operation. We both grew up on farms, and have continued that tradition. I also am a registered KSHSAA volleyball referee. All these hobbies keep me busy and out of trouble!

My goal is to become a 3rd grade elementary teacher. There wasn't one person who told me to do this, I just found it in my heart. I believe I was put here to educate our young people.

  17. My name is Lyn Boone. I am married with a grown son and an eleven year old son. I am from Hutchinson, Kansas. I have a menagerie of pets, and my hobby is art. I have my own website (www.lynboone.com) where I display my sculpture.

I had a 12 year career as a computer programmer and web developer before carpal tunnel forced a change in careers. I started substitute teaching while I went back to college to get my BFA in sculpture and fell in love with teaching. Having spent my school years in the Gifted program at my school, and with my youngest son having Asperger’s Syndrome I became interested in teaching special education. I have discovered that I have a real affinity for special needs children and am very excited about being able to make a difference for these children.

I will graduate this May in 2010 with a major in Elementary Education and a Minor in Special Education. I hope to continue on and get a Master’s degree in Gifted Education.

  18. Hi, my name is Tricia Meier. I was born and raised in Goodland, Ks. I currently live in Goodland with my husband Jacob and our one year old son Braxton. We enjoy spending as much time playing with our son and teaching him new things. I currently am a stay at home mom/student, which allows me so much quality time with Braxton.

The reason I want to teach children is because I realized in my old career that teaching would be more fulfilling. I just enjoy children's minds and how they think. I would like to teach kindergarten when I'm finished with school but overall I'm not too picky. I worked with a kindergarten teacher and she is the reason I enjoy kindergarten.

As for school I am currently a senior in elementary education. I will be graduating in the fall of 2010.

  19. I am Andrea McCarley; I live in Haviland, a small town between Pratt and Dodge City. I grew up and went to school here, and after moving around my first several years of college, my husband and I are back home. In addition to doing online classes, I sell Premier Designs jewelry and I’m starting my second year babysitting for a family with a 2 and 4 year old. It is great to spend time with kids and be a part of their lives until we are ready to have kids of our own!
I’ve always love working or playing with kids, and have babysat for a few different families since I was in grade school. I didn’t really know what I wanted to major in after high school; I just knew I wanted to work with kids. After starting out in Social Work, I realized that wasn’t where I was supposed to be and switched to Early Childhood. I had pretty much all great teachers in school, although there wasn’t a specific one that inspired me to teach. Even from first grade I would often help my peers with assignments, although I never really thought I would teach until my second year out of high school.
I especially enjoy working with young children, especially two year olds, but because of the small town I am in and the lack of available jobs with kids that young, I am thinking about teaching 3-4 year old preschool, or maybe Kindergarten. In my free time I enjoy watching movies with my husband, going to my little sister’s ballgames, or reading.

  20. Hello everyone! My name is Mallory Lammers. I am from Goodland, Kansas. I work at Good Samaritan Nursing Home as a cook/dietary aid and Hays Children Center as a substitute teacher. I stumbled into education and I have never looked back. I love education. Personally I would love to teach any grade. I think each grade has something wonderful to offer. All the students I have worked with have influenced me in this decision. I am very excited for this school year and I can not wait to study such an interesting subject!

  21. Hi everyone! My name is Sarah Rhodes. I live in Russell, Kansas with my husband, two kids, two dogs, two turtles, and one hampster. My husband just retired from the Marine Corps after 20 years of service, so needless to say, I am enjoying being able to make Russell a permanent home! No more moving for me except to the cemetary! =) I chose education because working with children comes easily to me. I think I am geared more for younger elementary grades, but will accept a job at any level. My mother was my biggest influence in becoming a teacher because she herself was a preschool teacher throughout my childhood. I believe I learned a lot from her while growing up. I currently sell jewelry for lia Sophia and stay rather busy with that and being a mom and wife. I look to graduate this spring and then jump right on in towards my Masters.

  22. Hello classmates! My name is Elizabeth (Liz) Krause. I currently live in my hometown, Herington, KS. I am employed by USD 305 and am a SLP Paraprofessional in the Herington, Hope and White City Schools. I have been married for 11 years. My husband is a manager for the Union Pacific Railroad. We have two children, both boys, ages 8 and 2. We have a bulldog named Jasper who keeps us on our toes. When we aren't working, schooling or enjoying all of our children's activities, I like to camp, cook, listen to music and ride with my husband on his Harley.

I cannot wait to become a teacher. The journey thus far has been fantastic, even when it has been challenging at times. I choose the field of education because I love working with children and the challenges to educate the diverse population. I love to see their faces when they have tried so hard to get something and to finally have that "aha" moment. If I can make a difference in one child's education, then that gives me that much more motivation to continue with the next. Every child deserves the chance at a quality education and I want to be the one to give it to them.

I am working towards to degree in elementary education. I would love to someday go back and work towards my masters in special education. I would love to work with the younger age children. I haven't had much experience with the upper grades, so I'm not exactly sure if I would enjoy the upper grades or not. My options are open at this point.

I don't think that I could pin point one specific person who influenced my decision to go into education. There have been many teachers and people in my life who have helped steer me in the right direction. My mother was a school teacher and I never thought that I would be. Once I got a taste of working with children in an educational setting, I was hooked. I have been inspired by many past and present teachers to strive to be like them. I have stored so much in my memory for future use.

Your introduction is due August 28.

  23. Hello everyone! My name is Candace Gay. I grew up in Colby, Kansas. I, as most Colby High graduates, attended Colby Community College and received my Associate of Arts degree in business administration. There, I met my husband, Brandon. We transferred to the University of Kansas where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. We stayed and lived in Lawrence for eight years and I worked in the early childhood education field. I was the director of three early education centers focused on at-risk children ages 2 weeks to 6 years. Although I enjoyed the administrative outlook on education, I feel I belong in a classroom. It was my high school French teacher who influenced me and pushed me the most. She encouraged me to set my goals high and realize the potential I had within myself.

A year ago my mother-in-law became ill and we relocated back to Brandon’s hometown, Norton, Kansas, so he could be with her. I took a job with the Norton school district as the at-risk tutor for grades fourth through sixth. I enjoy every aspect of my job greatly, but cannot wait until I have my own classroom! In the future I would like to teach in a 5th or 6th grade classroom.

As the at-risk tutor, I am part of a team of teachers who touch and enhance children’s lives each day. I want to continue to gain that sense of achievement as I pursue my teaching career. I couldn’t imagine my life without working with children everyday. I also enjoy being back in a small western Kansas town. There really is no place like home!

Along with my position as the at-risk tutor for Norton, I am also doing some case managing work for Big Brothers Big Sisters. I am also an active volunteer for Special Olympics, Autism Speaks, and United Way. In my free time I enjoy cooking, reading and playing with my two Cocker Spaniels, Olivia and Sophia.

Good luck to everyone this semester!!!

  24. Hello everyone! My name is Bailey Morgan, and I currently live in McCracken KS with my husband Allen, and our two boys, Caden-3, and Carter-1. Right now I am subbing three days a week for the LaCrosse School district, and also the high school cheerleading coach.

I never really thought twice about which I chose this field. I have always wanted to be a teacher, and I highly enjoy my time that I have spent in a classroom. I plan to student teach next semester, and graduate May 1010!

The more I am in the school, the more I think I would like to teach the lower elementary level, but with any job, I would be happy! After starting my collage journey in 2004 I switched my major to Early Childhood. After starting to sub in the school district, I realized that I wanted to teach, and be a part of a school system. That is waht influenced me the most in changing my degree back to Elementary Education.

In what little free time I have left, I enjoy going to the lake, traveling with my family, or sitting on the deck reading a book.

  27. My name is Crystal Lee Wilson, I am currently living in Independence, KS (my husband's hometown) but I was born in Aurora, CO to a military family who moved around the world. I am an assistant manager at the Wing Street Pizza Hut here in Independence, KS. This job keeps me pretty bust. I work 6 days a week on on average 42-45 hours a week. This beves me really only Saturday morning and Sundays to do my homework. I am in the elementary Education Program because I love children for one and for two my ex-husband told me that I would never make anything of myself and that I could not do it giving me more fule for my fire. I am unsure about the grade that and content area. I know that when I gent into the classroom it will be a guided blessing and I don't have a preference. I will be where I need to be. The reason that I am going ot be a teacher is sevearal good teachers I have had in the past but the most important person has to be my older sister. I love to play games online such as WOW and spend time with my family. I have a husband of a year and a half now- he is my best friend and we have a four year old son from my first marriage but our son condisers my husband his daddy. We don't have any pets beacuse we really don't have the extra time for animals at this point. My husband and I both work full time and take online classes full time. We are really pretty busy.

Once again I am sorry that this blog is late but between the car wreck my husband had on the 20th and work this past week this is the first day I have been able to get online.

  29. I am from Cheney, KS and i am happily married with five beautiful children. I am currently working special education while finishing my secondary certification. I am looking to get my masters in Adaptive Special Education. My older three children are very involved in youth sports. My wife gave birth to our twin boys in April. They are growing like crazy!

I really enjoy being around kids and making an impact in their lives. I have taken the road less traveled to get to education. I have a degree in Business Administration and a Masters in Management Information Systems.

I have coached high school and college sports over the past six years, but now I just coach my kids teams.

My grandmother and father were both teachers and huge impacts in my life and encourage me to go into education.

  30. Okay, I left out some information. I am unemployed due to high childcare costs. I am a stay at home mom and full time student. If any of you have young children, you can see how this is like 2 full time jobs. My parents also help me out with Kheridan because my husband works very long hours at an outdoor strenuous job. I chose education because I love teaching and I love working with children and I already have experience doing both of those things, so why not get the degree and start making money doing what I enjoy? I would like to teach 3rd graders. Who influenced this? The math, science and social studies internship I did last semester with 3rd graders. I also observed 1st graders and decided I liked 3rd graders better.

  33. To Crystal Wilson:

Yes, I bet your job does keep you busy. Wow, your schedule is pretty hectic. Reminds me of when I worked for Hertz Car Rental, I was the manager of the store and worked 60-72 hours a week. I was always tired and got tired of never being at home, we were newly weds then and it really sucked.
That is good that you can use the negativity from your ex husband to do something positive instead of accepting it. The best revenge (not that you want revenge) is to prove someone wrong. He shouldn't have said that, but he was wrong it seems. It's nice to meet you.

I wanted to get a sub job in my school district, but I am way to busy to do that right now. I graduate in Dec 2010, so I can only imagine how excited you are to graduate this semester. It's nice to meet you and I look forward to working with you this semester.
